ADSAP (Alcohol/Drug Safety Action Program)

Whether a drug is legal or illegal, approved or disapproved, obtained by a physician or bought on the black market, is less important than the relationship of the person with the drug.  Bad relationships begin with ignorance or denial of the nature of the effect of the substance; loss of the desired effect with increased frequency of the use, and progresses to difficulty leaving the drug alone, with eventual impairment of healthy or social functioning.

What is a drug?  A common definition is any substance that in all amounts produces significant changes in the body.  Every substance has the potential to develop into a dependency.  Addiction can be physical and/or psychological.  Addiction effects not only the user, but others, i.e. family and friends.  In 1998, an estimated 13.6 million Americans were current users of illicit drugs.
